Editorial Policy

This page explains how we research, write and update The Finance Lowdown — so you know what to expect from our UK money guides.

Our Mission

The Finance Lowdown exists to make UK personal finance clearer. We publish straightforward guides on everyday money topics — savings, banking, cashback, bills, credit and more — in plain English.

We aim for accuracy, fairness and transparency. Our tagline says it simply: Clear, honest UK money guidance.

How We Research Our Content

We base our guides on reputable UK sources. That typically includes official government guidance (such as GOV.UK and HMRC), regulator material where relevant, provider product pages, and established financial institutions.

Before we publish, we check key facts against more than one source where we can. When rates, thresholds or product features change often, we say so and point readers to the live source so they can confirm the latest figures.

We avoid unexplained jargon. If a technical term is needed, we explain it in everyday language.

How We Compare Products

When we compare products or services, we look at features that matter to real people — for example fees, interest rates, rewards, eligibility, ease of use and customer experience.

We try to show strengths and limitations clearly so you can weigh what fits your situation. Comparisons are for information. They are not personal recommendations and they are not personalised financial advice.

Commercial relationships do not decide how we structure a comparison or which points we highlight.

Our Independence

We do not sell financial products ourselves.

We do not offer personalised financial advice.

Editorial decisions stay independent of advertising or partnership pressure. If a page includes referral links, those links do not dictate our opinions or the shape of our guides.

Referral Disclosure

This site may contain referral links which help support our work.

Some pages also include referral links. If you click a link and later sign up or buy a product, we may earn a commission.

This does not:

  • change the price you pay
  • influence our editorial decisions
  • affect how we compare products

We aim to work with reputable companies that fit our standards. For a fuller picture of how links and commissions work on this site, see our Disclosure page.

Accuracy and Updates

UK money products and rules change. We review and update pages when rates, offers, eligibility or official guidance shift in ways that affect the article.

If we find an error, we correct it as soon as we reasonably can. You can also tell us — see How to Contact Us below, or our Complaints and Corrections page if you prefer that route.

We keep an eye on major UK money updates that affect our topics, such as banking changes, ISA rules, interest-rate movements and cashback programme changes. Always check the provider and official sources for the latest numbers before you act.

Our Tone and Style

  • Clear, friendly, conversational UK English
  • No jargon unless we explain it
  • No hard sell
  • Practical and calm — not hype
  • Impartial information, not personalised advice

We write for people who want a straight answer without a lecture. Short paragraphs, plain words, and links to trusted sources when the detail matters.
