How this calculator works

This calculates tax on dividends only, not on your other income. It ignores savings interest and the savings allowances.

Scottish taxpayers pay UK rates on dividends; because Scottish bands apply to other income, the overall picture can differ, so treat the result as a guide. Results are rounded to the penny.

GOV.UK’s worked example — £29,570 wages and £3,000 dividends — gives £268.75 of dividend tax, which this calculator matches.

The formulas we use

Personal Allowance (tapered over £100,000 of total income) is used by other income first, then dividends.

Dividends are stacked on top of other taxable income. The first £500 is taxed at 0% but still uses up band space.

Rates on the rest: 10.75% up to £37,700 of taxable income, 35.75% up to £125,140, 39.35% above.
